VOLUNTEERS

Are you interested in becoming a Pals For Life Volunteer?

If so, please read through the following information. Then feel free to fill out our online registration form, or contact us for more information.

Here's some information on what our volunteers do:

Pals For Life does pet assisted therapy in the Philadelphia region at nursing homes, mental health facilities and rehab centers. Our volunteers mainly use their own pets on our programs, and we also borrow pets from local animal shelters. Our programs generally take place Monday through Friday, between 10AM and 3PM, and some additional Saturdays. The duration of programs can vary, but generally last for one hour. Evening programs are rare, but do happen on occasion.

Pals For Life volunteers must attend a Volunteer Training Meeting within the first year of volunteering. This is just a basic information session, and an opportunity to meet other volunteers. It takes place quarterly, and lasts about 3 hours. To be an active volunteer, you must volunteer at least once every 6 months. All of our active volunteers receive (either electronically through e-mail, or through snail mail) our Volunteer Newsletter. In it we list any news that you may need to know, followed by a schedule of programs that we will be doing in a certain month. Each month as you look through the schedule, you decide which programs you are available to do. It can be once a month, or once a week…whatever your schedule allows. Then, you can call or e-mail us here at the office to let us know which programs you will be attending. We need to know how many people will be going to each facility, and we track volunteers and the time they give us. As long as you remain an active volunteer, you will continue to receive our newsletter. Every six months, we purge our mailing list to eliminate any inactive volunteers.

In order to use your pet in our programs, they will need to be temperament tested before they can attend visits. This test simply replicates situations that your pet may experience while visiting a facility to see how he or she responds. It takes place at our office, and lasts about 20-30 minutes.
